Noticing trends
Choose a few pieces of art, design or cultural items that you like or are curious about – maybe you like the colours or the theme of the piece. Once you have selected several works of art, think about which two have similarities: is it the subject matter? the colours? the size? texture? Are they both sculptures,or both landscape paintings, for example? Perhaps they both manage to evoke a particular feeling in you. It’s important that you choose two that you are interested in personally for some reason. They should “speak” to you – not just emotionally, but intellectually as well.
To Start:
Go through the style, use of colours, textures, subject matter of the artists, how they use contrast, was their work typical of the period.
Then look at the artists history, where they grew up and what might have influenced them.
I would start with the wikipedia entry on each artist (or a short biography) (it will probably summarise each artists style and influences) then look up a few of the artists signature works and see if I can write about it in my own words.
Their work might be different but they might be similar in how they are expressing their history, or how they are breaking away from the norms of their period.

- cultural
- their location
- the time period and events surrounding that time period
- Are the materials the same?
- Is the technique similar or the same?
- The mood or feeling, is that similar or different, how so?
- What is the concept behind the two, is that similar?
- What are the influences on the artists?
