Observational drawing - masks
Learning Objective: to be able to record from direct observation using oil pastels
Here are a collection of Masks borrowed from The Wilson Gallery.
You must draw by looking closely. You must fill one who page. Try to capture texture and tones. Your options:
1. You can choose 1 to draw with as much detail as possible, drawing the entire mask and drawing with oil pastels.
2. Draw sections of different masks and make them go off the edges of the page

Steps of Oil Pastels
1. Choose a middle colour, that is within your mask, draw the line only
4. Keep adding lighter tones, into the gaps, blending them back into the middle tone.
5. Add another even darker tone into the shadows |
2. With the same colour, press hard and soft to get gradients from where you see darker areas
6. Finally, with a white, go over the top to add your highlights.
There should be no white paper left. |
3. With a slightly lighter tone, work into the darkest areas again, blending out

Compositional drawing - masks
LO: To record from direct observation whilst experimenting with compositional elements
Draw sections of different masks and make them go off the edges of the page to create an interesting composition. Try drawing them in different sizes. See the example below
